Danubia NanoTech awarded the European Union Seal of Excellence for graphene temperature sensor for batteries

[Brussels, Belgium, 28 March, 2019] Danubia NanoTech was awarded the Seal of Excellence by the European Commission. The Community with this quality label gathers high-potential companies with projects which were judged to deserve funding but did not get it due to budget limits. It recognizes the value of the proposal and helps other funding bodies take advantage of the EU Horizon 2020 program evaluation process. The Seal shows political commitment by displaying the signatures of the Commissioners.

Danubia NanoTech applied for funding from SME Instrument for further business development of the graphene temperature sensor for batteries which is to monitor the temperature directly on the surface of the battery cells. The sensor is extremely thin film with high accuracy, ultra light and while produced by spray-coating, it is also very variable for application on flexible (curved) surfaces and practically unlimited in terms of coverage area. On self-adhesive film, the sensor’s application is very easy, with lower material costs (compared to widely used platinum sensors), with fast response and excellent accuracy.

Danubia NanoTech has been testing and validating this sensor on the batteries for the distribution grid / EV charging support. It can be however equally interesting for EV batteries to prevent unbalanced usage of the cells in the battery pack. Managing of an even distribution of temperature is key to operating of EV batteries close to their performance limits. Maximum battery life can be achieved if temperature of individual cells does not differ significantly. The detailed monitoring of the battery temperature directly on the individual battery cells can thus bring great benefits and prevent potential negative effects of overheating which implicitly improves the state of health i.e. lifetime of batteries as well as prevents their technical failures. The detailed monitoring of batteries is equally important for warranty purposes.
